Mr. Frank’s class has been making good progress.
The students know to start journaling first thing in the morning. There is always a journal topic on the board and the students open their journals and get right to work. I have been pushing vocabulary using both weekly spelling lists and a text book called “Wordly Wise” to work on their vocabulary. We work on reading with a variety of handouts. This last week it was a long article on Hurricanes. All of the reading work requires written response and I concentrate on the students using complete sentences with good grammar.
We are also using a challenging Social Studies test. Our first unit was on early peoples and migration, then I sent home the unit on Indian people and we have started the third unit on colonial life.
I experimented with sending that second unit home because I wanted to quickly get to colonial life so we can get through that text in one year.
Of course, the students also do science, this week we are starting on simple machines. They switch classes to do math with another teacher, but I also like to spend some time on Math as well and we are currently working on Geometry.
