Mr. Frank’s class has been making good progress.
The students know to start journaling first thing in the morning. There is always a journal topic on the board and the students open their journals and get right to work. I have been pushing vocabulary using both weekly spelling lists and a text book called “Wordly Wise” to work on their vocabulary. We work on reading with a variety of handouts. This last week it was a long article on Hurricanes. All of the reading work requires written response and I concentrate on the students using complete sentences with good grammar. It has been an exciting start to a new school year. One of the exciting events was an eclipse. We used this event to start a section in science on the solar system and studied specifically about the Sun, the Moon, and about Solar and Lunar eclipses. I feel like April has been a whirlwind of activity. We had Easter and testing and Earth day as well as Photo day. In preparation for testing we did a wide variety of work trying to fill in any gaps in Knowledge we might have missed. We spent a lot of time on parts of speech and on science. In Mr. Frank’s class we are still doing Singapore Math and have moved on to the second book. This method of math teaching is heavy on learning why we do things in math and has lots of word problems. In class we read the book “Matilda” by Roald Dahl and the children got very into the book, towards the end one could even say they were enthralled.
